I am hoping to make some little card candy molds to go in the front of the gift baskets that I am doing. I am not sure how to add the color though. I know this is a silly question to those of you that do this all the time, so sorry for the simplicity. here are the cards I was looking at:

What do I use to paint them with? Do I paint the mold ahead of time or paint the finished chocolate?

Thanks for your help!!!

You paint after the chocolate has set.

you could fill the mold with the different colors or "paint" into the mold. If the areas you want to color are indented, you can fill those areas with colored candy melts (either buy them precolored or add candy color to them. You can only use gel colors with candy if you add something like Crisco (just a bit) or Paramount Crystals to it because the gel colors straight will seize up your chocolate). Put the melted candy melts in a parchment bag or little squeeze bottle and fill the crevices. Or, use a paint brush to brush the colored chocolate where you want it, let it set, and then fill with the regular chocolate. Hope that makes sense!

I have used the powered food coloring it worked great cause I can use it with the candy and cakes whereas with the regular gel paste it is water based and will mess up the chocolate. So I passed on the candy gel paste which is oil based cause I don't color all my candy but I do a lot of cakes and it works very well for both.

I use my pastry bags to pipe the color in the mold let that set and then put the background chocolate color on top of that. icon_smile.gif

You melt white chocolate buttons or the almond bark, in small glass jars or glasses. Then you add powdered food coloring or special candy coloring to make the green and the red colors. Then you "paint" the colors onto the inside of the mold. When they are dry, pour melted milk chocolate into the mold, tap the mold lightly to make sure the choc. settles, then put in the freezer til set. Then unmold.
If you wait to paint the colors on after it is molded, it won't look right.

Thanks so much for all of the responses! You are all so helpful! I really appreciate the details because it can be a little overwhelming looking at all of the products and trying to decide what would be best for each application!

candyladyhelen- thanks for laying it out step by step for me...that is what I need right now because I am so clueless about this! icon_smile.gif

Thanks again for the help! icon_smile.gif

I only get to buy them when we return to PA for a visit! I get them at a candy/cake supply store. Never did a search on the net to see who may have them.
