I have been decorating cakes for about 2 years now. By word of mouth I have been getting a few more cake orders. I thought I would start making it more of a business but not sure what I have to do? I got a retail certificate to charge sales tax but is there anything else I need to do so I can advertise and not get in trouble?? I don't do tons of cakes. I may to 5-6 cakes a month or go a couple of months without an order. I just enjoy doing and thought of trying to advertise. I'm a stay at home mom that just wants to expand my hobby. I live in Kansas.... Any help would be great....

icon_smile.gif First off, congrats! I checked the 'states that license bakeries' thread at the top of this page.......you are in Kansas, you are governed by the Dept of Ag. I am in NC, we are the same.

I would say that you need to be licensed and able to advertise that way without getting into trouble. In NC, it was easy for me.....maybe others can offer more advice. The question is are you going to do this as a hobby or a business? If you are selling them, I would think that is a business. JMO> icon_smile.gif

Best wishes.....

Ok... so if I need to get licensed does it take a lot to do that out of your home?

icon_smile.gifthumbs_up.gif It was easy for me.......you are more than welcome to pm me and I will tell you what I did, what they looked for, etc. I am leaving for grocery shopping in a few, but could get back to you. Maybe others today will read your post and can offer help as well. icon_smile.gif
