I made a cake last night and fell asleep after I took it out of the pans to cool. It sat out all night unwrapped. Did it dry out inside? Did it hurt the cake because it wasn't iced yet? Should I throw it out and make another cake completely? I'm very new to this and have only made cakes the day they are needed, I've never made one and stored it until it was needed. I guess I have a ton to learn yet.....
I would love to learn about freezing cakes and making them ahead of time, but I have a ways to get there yet, lol!
Usually the "crust" of the cake will keep it moist for a while. It should be fine. I have done the exact same thing before and as long as the cake has not been cut, it should hold its moisture.
Not sure - it might be a little dryer than usual but I don't think it would be a total loss. Or you can crumble them up and make cake balls!
Making ahead is super easy. Just bake as usual, cool, wrap in plenty of plastic wrap and put them in the freezer. They'll last several weeks and be super moist. I do it all the time and it is really convenient to be able to bake ahead and not have to bake/decorate all on the same day.
No...you didn't hurt it. 2 things....1. You could wrap them and do a quick freeze to moisten it up or my favorite.....Make a simple syrup and soak it in to the cake.
I have done the same thing and saw no ill effects. if you are worried, do a wash, and you'll be set.
