I am in the beginning phase of building a house. I am getting close to having to pick countertops for my kitchen. I am looking at Corian and Granite but there is also Silestone. I am needing recommendations. If you have one of these, how does it work for? I don't know if this is true, but I heard that fondant sticks less to Granite because it stays cold. Unfortunately, Granite must be sealed yearly to prevent stains. Corian and Silestone are nonporous so they are less maintenance. If you have any other advice about a new kitchen, I would greatly appreciate it. I plan on getting a double oven.

I guess it would be a personal preference really ... granite is just gorgeous, but if you do a lot of cakes or have a business out of your home, you may want to consider the other 2 types you mentioned; that is if you do a lot of fondant and felt this would be a problem... there is also silicon mats that one could purchase to roll fondant out on if a cabinet top wasn't available for use ... good luck with whatever choice you do decide on .. and congrats on your new house!!
maybe you could get a small piece of each and try it out with the fondant to see what works best. just a thought.
i just moved to my new home and i got Corian they are great cause they don't stain if you are doing colored fodant. it wipes up very quick. i haven't had any problems with mine. good luck on your choice. and have lots of fun picking all the cool things for your home i know i did.
My last home had corian counter tops and I loved them They were very nice and easy to clean.
I have corian, and it is very easy to clean, but ohh granite looks so beautiful. I do have a granite counter top on my island. That hasn't given me any problems. I don't roll anything out on either of my tops without having something down first. The biggest draw back to corian is that it scratches easily, but those can be buffed out. I have black corian and it does show the scratches quicker then the lighter colors. I have the intergrated sink that i just love(this and the moulded back stop is why we went with the corian) Its deep and cleans easily and i don't get any build up around the edges like my old sink used to get.
I have had this dark granite counter for 5 years now and my "pastry chef" daughrter has done everything from fondant, pulled sugar, chocolate to pastry dough and breads on it and it is not sealed... just highly polished before it was installed. My granite man said it did not need to be sealed because it was not a light color and my sink was sunk in with the granite ont top of it (flush mounted so to speak). She always has some wilton color gel smeared on it and it cleans up even after it sits until I noticed it. Also I love the fact you can put the hot pans and pots right on it. It does stay very cool also. The flush sink is great because you can sweep all the crumbs right off the counter into it. I wouldn't trade my granite for anything. I just wish my floor had held up half as well. My girlfriend had a very light white and pink granite and hers stained around the sink because the sink was resting ontop of the granite and it was not sealed well around the sink. Anything oily can seep in and stain but I have not had any problems even with oil splatters from the stove.

I have the Silestone and I'm very happy with it. Things do stick a little, as with any surface -so the silicone mat is the best!
