i bought some of the colored dics and when i tried to melt them they just got stiff? never melted all the way? i used a microwave but the choc. blocks melted really well what am i doing wrong.
Could be too hot (I know sounds weird). I have had this problem and overcome it by adding a small amount of shortening to the discs and nuking them for longer time at only 20-30%.
I agree. Probably too much heat all at once. Reduce the power or reduce the time. Take the chocolate/colored disks out and stir stir stir and stir!! That helps to blend the hotter pieces with the warmer pieces to help melt consistently.
Wow!!! I hope that makes sense. I just reread that and I'm not sure if it does.
Good luck!!!

Yep, mine have burnt on occasion too! Same microwave, same amount of time, same person pushing the button...but they burn...or they don't. I like the idea of putting in some shortening. I've heard that I should color it that way too because gel colors will seize the chocolate?
That is a good idea for coloring definately. I will have to try it. I made the mistake one time of coloring some white chocolate yellow because I ran out of yellow melts. Yeah, I had no idea the effect the coloring would have on it. It seizes instantaneously!!!

Did your wafers have a bloom on them? They may have been old. They would still be fine to use. You would have just needed to add paramont crystals or a little shortening to them. Also, what are you using to melt them in? Glass could be causing hot spots on you.
i tried glass and plastic...my microwave doesnt have a setting to turn down the heat...how long are the melts good for? the lady where i bought them said they was from easter...
I always melt on the stove. Never had luck in the microwave. Glass bowl with chocolate in it over top of a sauce pan with water and low heat. Works like a charm every time, just don't let the water boil or you will most likely get steam (water) in your chocolate. Not good.
it sounds like they got a little water in the bowl too. you have to use oil based color to color chocolate.
If you have more of the wafers left, try melting them in a plastic type of bowl in the micro for 30 seconds at a time. Stir them to help melt and add a little shortening to revive them. Let me know if you are able to turn this around. Pastel colors can be very tricky to melt. Yellow being the hardest most of the time. I am not sure why. If you have more questions or need more info, let me know. Glad to help. I've been molding chocolates for over 20 years.
