Okay, so I was asked to do a lingerie cake for a lingerie shower/bachelorette party for my husband's cousin for this past Saturday. I also had another cake due for Saturday morning as well, and we were going out of town so I wanted to deliver them both Saturday morning. So...last Monday and Tuesday I was up until 11, Wednesday up until 2, Thursday up til 1:30, and Friday I was up until 4AM! (I know none of you are strangers to late night decorating, but this was a new one for me). After 3 hours sleep, bleary eyed I got in the shower. Then I used half a bottle of visine to try and get the red out of my eyes. I just had enough time to put the cake in a box and snap a picture of it and then put the lid in a box(it was a gift box) and take a picture of that too. I really wish I had set it up at home and taken a picture! Anyway, so I deliver the first cake, no problem. I deliver the lingerie cake and the hostess just loves it. I said, do you want me to set it up? I wanted to prop up the lid, put some of the extra gumpaste tissue around the board and take a really great picture. She said, oh I don't have my tables ready or tablecloths on the tables yet. I said, well when you set it up will you take some pictures and send them to me? She said, oh sure! Well this morning, I email one of the hostesses and asked how it went and if she could send me the pictures of the cake. She never replied, which is strange b/c she is always very quick to respond. So my MIL emails me and says, do you have pictures of the cake? She had seen the two pictures I had taken, so I said, no I emailed so and so but she hasn't responded. So then my MIL calls me and says that the wedding (which is in 3 weeks) is off! The groom said he can't do it! OMG! So, I realize that my cake was the least of anyone's concerns. They paid me for it, so I am not complaining about that. I feel TERRIBLE for my cousin-in-law, poor girl. However, they knew on Friday. I even called the hostess on Friday night to confirm delivery. I realize it was not her place to tell me, but still! All that time! All those nights with 5 hours sleep! And I didn't even get a good picture! So now I want to know, what happened to the cake? I mean, the gumpaste bra with lace appliques on top, all brushed with luster dust, the gumpaste bow and ribbon, the tissue paper...*sigh* and no good picture. Waaaaahhhhhhh! And I know, I know, it was a good learning experience, good practice, yada yada yada. Whatever.

You're probably right, unfortunately............what else can you say to this one except good practice, good learning experience, yadda yadda yadda. I'm sorry you had to spend all that time on this, though, and it sounds like people didn't even get to enjoy it. And then, you don't even have a nice picture to show for it. Wahhhhh. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

Suzanne

wow how sad for the bride and groom. Maybe they had a "you'll need to look sexy cause your back on the market party" smile- not funny, but I hope it all works out!!

Ha, I thought of that. Maybe they got together anyway and pigged out on cake. Doubtful, though.
Now I find out that the cake is still where I dropped it off! She didn't even take it to work with her or anything! (the hostess) So now it is going to waste and nobody's eating it! I just don't understand why nobody told me! Like I said I realize it was a very awkward situation. But why didn't anyone tell me!!!!!! I would have happily (well sort of) taken my cake with me and brought it in to my office! It's kind of irritating that they have no idea how much time I put into that cake and now it's just sitting there! I know, my cake troubles are nothing compared to that of the jilted bride. I can't imagine how she must be feeling.
So, if I baked the cake on Wed. and put it in the freezer, then I took it out and iced it on Thurs and put it in the fridge, then Friday I took it out of the fridge and it's been out ever since. Do you think it would still be good? I'll give her her money back and take my cake back!
I told my MIL, who's going to call the hostess, I'd at least like to take a picture of it!

That's a tough situation. I feel sorry for the whole bunch! Maybe the hostess will take a picture for you...I'm sure the cake looked wonderful.

Yeah, she could set it up on her table and take some pix for me. I don't think that's asking too much.
Oh, I forgot to mention in the original post that it took me over an hour to roll out the fondant for the cake. It kept getting bubbles in it, then when I would get it right, I'd try to put it on the cake, but it would stretch out and then wouldn't be long enough on the sides! I broke down and cried after the first hour of trying. I think it took me another 30 minutes or so after that to get it right. That was one long night.

I'm not sure how to say this..not to sound cold or unfeeling...but the cake is a product... like a painting, it is not yours anymore once you sold it and you have to learn to detach and move on to the next creation... life is too short to hold on to the yesterday of it...looking through the perspective of the bride that was jilted, the cake is frozen in place just like she is... you have to let her deal with it however she does and let go of your cake...it's bought and paid for. Short of a happy change of heart, (not likely), you have to forego the pictures...

Even if she would have told you Friday that the wedding shower was canceled...you had already started on the cake...so maybe they were being considerate. I think right now taking a picture of a cake that reminds her that there is going to be no wedding isn't something she really has as a priority. I'm really not trying to be harsh at all, but they did pay for the cake & what they do with it is up to them. Plus, i would think with it being Tuesday that the cake would be no good.
And with all the stuff that the bride is going through right now..i wouldn't bother them about a picture...she probably has deposits she isn't getting back...a bunch of people to uninvite, etc.

I just feel I have to clarify. I never asked the bride for a picture, i would never do that. I have been talking to two of her bridesmaids/hostesses, who are family. I know they paid for the cake, and they can do with it what they want. Which apparently is to sell it to someone for a shower in January. (they put it in the freezer.) Now you have to admit, that is funny.
I am glad that I finished the cake, it was good practice. And now I know how to do a bra and a bow!

I really don't understand your problem. I don't mean to sound cold eighter, but....if you didn't take a good picture of THE cake while you had a chance...

so sad ...too bad!

You took the order for the cake...you got paid to make it and deliver it.

Case closed! You have to stop worrying about it. It's THEIR cake to do WHATEVER they want with it!!

If you feel that you didn't get paid enough for your time, then raise your prices so you can get a GOOD camera and take those pictures!!

Oh..and by the way!!! I know I'm no photographer...but....you take a better picture of the cake...outside of the box!

As soon as I learn how to manipulate the editing program they talk about in the forum, I'm going to crop out all the excess background in my pics and repost on my web site.

I have a habit now, that I take a PICTURE of EVERY cake that I make. It's added insurance for me.

The customer is told also, so they can't come back to me and say I gave them a hokey cake! I have the pics to prove everything was in place when they picked it up!

So. Now...All that said and done....Breathe, relax.....and LET IT GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Chefgirl - chin up - we all have these days! It's hard to let a cake go sometimes, only your fellow CC members will understand how you feel icon_smile.gif.
There was really nothing else you could do but mourn the loss of the cake and the picture opportunity.
But.... I hope you feel like you can express how you're feeling here without hand slaps or shut downs. Keep at it!! And I'm sure you'll be consoling us often too!

What will happen to the gumpaste bra and tissue paper that are on the cake when they take it out of the freezer? I've never tried to freeze finished gumpaste pieces and then thaw them out.

they might end up wit a googy mess, depending on how it is wrapped.
As for the freezing, thawing, freezing and again thawing in Jan I dont think that cake will be good to eat. I never re-freeze a cake.
Maybe u should let them know before they poison the next wedding party!

please ask them not to do this, they will end up selling a mess to someone in January and then they will ask who made it. sorry to scare you but this is the first thing I thought of when you posted about them reselling the cake
