I finished a cake last night and just found an air pocket/buble forming under the frosting- help! Does any one have any idea why?

I made a white cake, lemon curd filling and crusting buttercream. the cake has been at room temperture as I have fondant figures on top.

I was just looking at it and noticed a hairline crack, that I saw was from an air pocket starting under the frosting. I stuck in a toothpick - air our looks ok - but I am now in a slight panic.

I am thinking about putting in frig ?? (we have mild weather) Should I be worried - cake will be served in about 12 houjrs. - in slight panic, any one encounter this??

It should be fine. The crusting B.C. is like a protective shell!

If it is a crusting buttercream you can just take a toothpick and poke a small hole to let the air out and pat the icing back down.

Hi, in my experience BC cracks when the consistency is too thick, I always use med-thin consistency. Don't worry about the crack, I would let all the air out, as you already did, and as you said you have fondant decorations? I would try and cover the crack with a decorations. If that is not possible, don't worry too much, it is fine, just next time try thinner icing and see if this works for you. HTH and good luck!
