.... eating my buttercream and my fondant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

... and the only reason I'm not eating cakescraps is because there are no more left!

icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

I have only decorated a few cakes before, but I got the bug again recently and a couple of weeks ago I made my first fondant cake. I used MMF and ate LOTS of leftover fondant! I also made figures out of candy clay and ate lots of that leftover too! icon_redface.gif

Now I'm wanting to try to make some fondant figures so last night I made Michelle Foster's Delicious Fondant and it is... DELICIOUS! I have been grabbing little wads of it throughout the day. icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif I am so bad!!!! Why can't I resist all this sugar???

So... I'm posting in the "How Do I?" forum because I want you all to tell me - HOW do I stop eating all this stuff while I am making and decorating these cakes??? Honestly I enjoy doing cakes but this is going to be a disaster for my weight icon_cry.gif

My suggestion is to chew gum while you are decorating. And just like going to the grocery store - try not to do it on an empty stomach!

Oh, Steph, how I've been there! I made a wedding cake last weekend, of course had some extra icing - and ALL day at work on Monday, I was craving the icing. I came home and HAD to have a spoonful of icing. My husband thought I had lost my mind! LOL

To be quite honest, I go through spurts, where I will want stuff, and then other times, I won't. For me, it probably depends on what I'm working on. The larger and more time consuming the project, the less I eat, since I'm working at it for so long.

To avoid eating stuff, I usually drink something instead, and everytime I'm tempted, I just take a drink. Plus, I put my IPOD on, and sing like none other - you can't sound like Madonna with wads of fondant or icing in your mouth.

Maybe set a side a little bit that you can eat, and put the rest as "off limits". Of course, this is easier said than done, but it's worth a try.

Another motivator for you might be to read up on the effects of sugar on our bodies. That sure helped me! icon_smile.gif

Sorry but I had to laugh.. icon_lol.gif A lot of people have this problem.. I am not one of them. I don't really like frosting and I find fondant (even MMF)icky too. I am not a sweets person. I like cake, but I hardly ever have any scraps.

Hmm.. maybe you need to think about it as if the supplies are only for use when decorating? Like is office supplies?? icon_lol.gif Hypnotize yourself into thinking sugar is poison? icon_wink.gif

Early this month I had several cookie and cake orders and I really pigged out on my dough, cake scraps, and icing. I was feeling really sluggish. Tuesday I did a really good intestinal cleanse and I started my work out routine as well this week. I feel 100% better. Also, I normally chew gum as well when doing baking and decorating and it really helps. I must've not had any gum in my purse those weeks. If you want your figure get you some gum really fast!!

I have the same problem and found that If I freeze any and all leftovers then I dont have a problem because I couldnt be bother to defrost it just to nibble on it all day long lol. Works like a charm every time. I even freeze my fondant (Toba's) without any problem I just defrost it on the counter in all it's wrapping

I was going to ask this question! I made white chocolate buttercream the other day and I was tap hitting off the frosting bag! icon_cry.gif AAHHHH!!

I was trying to figure out how to lose weight and decorate cakes because I didn't think the two were going to go together for me but I've had leftovers hanging around my house all week and haven't touched them. I'm really kind of shocked by that but maybe I had my fill that first night. I hope. icon_cool.gif

Yes you will get over it - I used to have this problem too when I started out. For me I find its a slippery slope, once I start I can't stop! So for me the trick is not to have the tiniest bit of anything (like others have said, chewing gum helps, also brushing your teeth, mints etc) And I've found a source for my cake scraps, a colleague at work's DH loves them with custard, so I pack them all into an icecream container to pass on. That was I start thinking that 'they're for Paul' so I don't touch them either!

On the contrary! I was having a BAAAAAAAAD chocolate craving about a month ago!! I started scouring the cabinets, then realized....wait, I have cake!!....I went out to the garage, Grabbed a bag of chocolate scraps (supposedly waiting for cake truffles), oh and might as well get that bag of choc syrup frosting in there, and yeah, that's right, I had Heath toffee chips in the cabinet!!! Defrosted the cake and frosting, topped with the toffee chips, and Whalla! The best "I gotta chocolate craving and need something now!" fix ever!! When I sat down with it, my dh looked over at me as I took my first bite... I just said "what?!?!"... he just smiled and shook his head in shame! So, (sorry for the long story!) freezing for me just makes it easier to have a sinful dessert any time I want!! icon_biggrin.gif

BTW, I like the chewing gum advise!! Will be trying that! I've been on the diet for a week and luckily, the cake orders have slown down for a while! (hmmm, lucky or unlucky? not so sure. icon_confused.gif )

JAJAJA that is so funny, because I have the same problem, I eat all my cake leftovers, but now i had been puting them in the trash. I have gained 15 pounds since I started derorating cakes( last year).
I started a diet last week, so far I had lost 5 pounds, will see if I can lose 10 more pounds icon_cry.gif

this is great, I was thinking of starting a thread on how to lose weight while decorating cakes, I'm glad I'm not the only one with a problem picking at leftover scraps and frosting. I used to decorate cakes at a bakery and I didn't like their cakes and the huge tubs of frosting grossed me out so it wasn't a problem. Now that I'm doing it on my own, however, my cakes are tasty and my frosting comes in smaller quantities, it's hard to resist!
The freezer won't stop me either, btw... I give some cake scraps to the kids but I don't want them having all the sugar either, ugh. This is killing my weight watchers success.

Oh wow... I see lots of people have this problem!! I am VERY VERY bad with this. I just had my second child (more like 5 months ago) and I lost most of my baby weight... and then started cake decorating way more often, now I'm right back up there. And believe me, whether I'm working on an empty stomach or not... makes no difference! LOL! Like amberhoney said though, once you start you can't stop. I find if I don't even have a taste... i won't know what I'm missing, therefore, I won't want more.

I have this problem also. I set a little bit aside and hit on it when I need to. I also keep scraps to reward myself when I am done with the cake completely! It's like something to look forward to! I also think about how my customer would feel if they knew I was pigging out . . . yikes! icon_redface.gif Anyway, stay strong! Hope you find some encouragement here!

I usually drink lots and lots of water and when I am in the kitchen, I make sure to always have a full glass of water with lots of ice near by. My tummy is so full of water - I don't feel like eating! And if I happen to sneak a taste or two of the icing/fondant - all the running to the bathroom works it off!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! icon_lol.gif

I was getting such bad headaches that I HAD to stop! I would eat all the left overs and then would feel just awful ... so icing is off limits ... I tell myself, "You'll feel horrible if you eat this!" Unfortunately, I don't have a overweight issue so I can't SEE the problem with it ... but I would get rather embarassed when I showed up to the parties and my tongue would be some brigth-unnatural color!!

My trick -- make soup (something salty), listen to music, and THROW AWAY anything that you can (scraps and crazy icing colors!) Oh, and keep a wet dishcloth close by so that you can wipe off your hands and won't be tempted to lick your fingers!

But I have to admit ... I do keep the fondant and a little icing -- just in case I NEED a quick bit of sugar.

Make cakes in flavors that everyone loves except you! I hate strawberries (I know everyone thinks I'm nuts), so I have no problem in not tasting the cake or the frosting. Anything chocolate whether white or dark is my down fall.
Just keep you a large glass of water filled and keep drinking it. After all you need at least 8 glasses a day, so all that water will keep you full. I always keep a straw in my drink so I can just keep sipping away, don't even need hands. Everytime your hand goes to your mouth you have to stop and go wash again. Dry rough hands are also not fun.

icon_rolleyes.gif Other day I was going to ask my fellow CC'ers ,that how do you keep your sugar intake in check .I was worried about my weight ,(i've already gained tons after my son icon_redface.gif )because Iam trying all sorts of new things I found here on this site, and taste testing is very impotant. icon_biggrin.gif

Luckily, I'm kind of picky - I only like chocolate. So, I do my best to make vanilla cakes, or other flavors I wouldn't eat. I don't know if that helps you at all, but it sure keeps me away! Of course, sometimes I can't help myself and I make chocolate - then I'm really in trouble! I also do my best to throw away/give away anything that tempts me immediately afterwards - if it doesn't hang around the house, I'm better off. I also keep stuff in the freezer, not the refrigerator - I'm less likely to dip into there for some reason.

Good luck!

I will have to try the gum advice. The only thing that keeps me from eating is to not bake. I had a 4 month non-baking streak due to a broken wrist recently and I lost 20 pounds! Rehab involves squeezing and what is better to squeeze than an icing bag? I'll go buy gum this morning while I'm at the grocery store buying more butter, sugar, heavy cream......

I am so glad I am not alone! (Though I'm sorry the rest of you are struggling like I am icon_sad.gif )

As far as the newness wearing off, I don't make cakes often enough for that... I can imagine how being around it all day would make it wear off, but I only make a cake once a month or so - but in the meantime, I am making fondant to practice with, or a different bc recipe to taste test, or whatever... so far the newness has definitely not worn off for me!

Chewing gum while decorating is a great idea... I'll definitely try it. Hopefully I'll have the willpower at least to not spit out my gum icon_razz.gif I'll have to get those long bags of gum with ten packs in them so I can give myself a fresh piece every so often as I decorate, when I am dying to eat frosting instead.

Freezing leftovers might be a help except that 1) I don't have much freezer space, and 2) I'm so pathetic I'd even eat it frozen. Seriously.

Sunflowerfreak - Here is Michelle Foster's recipe - it is delish - consider yourself warned icon_wink.gif

Thanks everyone for your support. My DH does not even like sugar icon_eek.gif so he totally does NOT understand why this is so hard for me. I sooooo wish I were more like him!
