OK I have some questions. I would like to get into making Wedding cakes. How do I find brides? How do you do the bridge tastings? Do you gather a bunch of brides and serve samples? If there is only one bride, how do you do the samples? I don't think you would have a few cakes to sample for only 1 bride. Please tell me how you would go about all of this. thanks you guys are awesome sunflowerfreak
I speak with the bride over the phone while she is making the tasting appt. and I would ask her then to choose two flavor combinations and make a little 5 in. cake for the tasters. Or even cupcakes. Just a thought.
The best referrals I have gotten come from florists, hotels, and caterers. If you can impress them, you will get calls. Set up a website and send them a card.
I usually find out what flavors the bride is interested in and make 2-3 items. Some others here have suggested providing cake, fillings, and icings separately to allow them to mix and match on their own.
I've got it lucky, most of my brides want plain vanilla or chocolate & most don't even taste while I'm their taking the order. Is my rep that good...or do they just not care?
My next bride just lucked out...
They want cheesecakes, and I made 2- 8" in different flavors for her and her fiance to try. We were leaving for vacation the next day, so they cakes would have gone to waste, so I sent both of them home with her, and she took them to a party that night to share with some friends. I didn't charge her, but she spent over $600 on this cake, so I figured why not? Plus, that many more people got to taste them.
I've gone to a few florists and havent gotten any biz from them yet. One said she wont give out a card or referral for me until she orders a cake from me, but thats not going to happen anytime soon cause I blew that chance by not making her a character pan cake.
Find a caterer that does not make cakes and take them a sample. They can refer people to you to make the cake. Also if you don't have a legal kitchen then you could use the caterers.
gosh I've thought about the florist thing, to draw up buisness but am so afraid I'd be looked at like I'm stupid,I don't know how to go about it but would love to.I mean what does a floral shop do if I brought in mini wedding cakes, eat them themselves to see if they should spread the word,or throw them out cause they don't know me from a whole in the wall
sometimes i have left over cake batter and will make up a 1layer 6 inch and freeze it, usually my family just eats it, but anytime you have extra batter you could do that, the cakes freeze well and then you'd have some on hand without making up a whole batch. also, i've heard bc freezes well.
I made a website with lots of wedding pictures and then mailed every florist, caterer, coordinator, reception hall, and church in the surround towns a note and several business cards. I've gotten several customers from it.
I participated at a local bridal show where many of them got samples. It was good reinforcement of my name and a good intro to those who didn't know about me.
