The frosting recipe that I've been using calls for 1 cup of shortening and 2 pounds of sugar. But looking through the recipes on here, it looks like most of them have 1 cup of shortening and/or butter for every pound of sugar. I'm just wondering if my recipe is using too much sugar and if I need to only use 1 pound of sugar? Thanks.

I use 1c Crisco for every 1lb of confectioners sugar. Check the recipes on this site for more on Icings.

There are a million (at least it seems) powdered sugar frosting recipes (I don't call these buttercreams, that title identifies the IMB and SMB's) and all of them either vary the ratio of shortening to butter, or pure butter or pure shortening, and the amount of powdered sugar.

You can basically use whatever amount of sugar you want. I have a recipe that calls for 3 cups of powdered sugar, which is less than 1lb., per cup of fat (butter or shortening.) It all depends on your sweet tooth really, lol.

There is nothing wrong with the recipe. I use a recipe that calls for 1.5 cups of crisco for 2lbs of sugar. Ths is the biggest difference in Buttercream recipes is the amounts of things as must usually use the same ingredients.

I bet your recipes crusts really fast and hard doesn't it? If you want to it to crust a little softer you can always add more crisco. But if the recipe works great for you as is, then don't worry about what other recipes say. icon_smile.gif
