Anyone Used A Plastic Tablecloth To Cover Boards?

If you have, did it look ok? If you haven't used it, do you think it would work? I need blue, and can't find blue wrapping paper or blue contact paper, but I'm sure the dollar store has a blue tablecloth. Would it work?
I wouldn't use one because when the cake gets cut it will also cut the table cloth, It's very thin and tears easy too. Can you cover the board with blue wrapping paper and then cover it with clear contact paper?
The problem is I can't find any solid blue wrapping paper, or blue contact paper. It all has some type of pattern on it.
I should have bought some blue foil at the cake supply shop yesterday. I thought I would be able to find blue paper that wasn't baby blue, so I didn't get it while I was there. They are closed today due to a death in the family.
I use vynil table cloths. I found then on sale at the Dollar General after easter 90% off for for $.30 I can made who knows how many. It's thicker than a plastic tablecloth, but you get the same effect for about the same price. I did notice a one tear in from cutting the cake, but it was the hardest cake i've ever had to cut. Multi layers and had fresh fruit on top, etc. Any other cake and it would have never torn.
After calling all over town, Ace hardware says they have blue contact paper. Hopefully it's the right color blue!
Just get clear contact paper. Then next time you need something you can put a different color or wrapping paper down and you won't have to go hunt a different contact paper.
Does it look ok to cover the boards with just clear paper? I wanted it to be blue, but couldn't find plain blue paper that wasn't baby shower color. I have clear.

I use the plastic tablecloths you are talking about. They work for me and I haven't had a problem with ripping when you are cutting. They are okay to use and look okay if you get it tight enough. I assume contact paper looks better, though. What about painting your board blue and covering it with contact paper? Just use a non-toxic paint and make sure it is completely covered. HTH
DO NOT PUT THE CAKE DIRECTLY ON COLORED CONTACT PAPER OR ON COLORED WRAPPING PAPERS, ETC.--THEY MAY (AND PROBABLY DO) CONTAIN LEAD FOR THE COLORS.
There are MANY debates over this on CC. You can search my screen name or vinyl and see them.
My solution to this is to put clear contact paper over the colored. I also put all tiers on their own board under the cake. I tape the cake (on a board the same size as the tier, e.g. 10" round) with double sided carpet tape to the clear contact covered decorative board. If the border is very wide, I also put a piece of parchment a bit larger than the bottom tier under it so that the icing doesn't touch the vinyl.
As for plastic table covers, I would do the same as above because they are generally very thin and cut easily. I don't want plastic bits to come off on the serrated knife, either.

That's what I did. I couldn't find solid color wrapping paper anywhere!
We use plastic with felt backing you would get at a fabric store. I find scrape peices that are cheep. They work really well, I've only had one that cut and we just replaced one so far.
