If so, what did you think. I have a grooms cake to do and they want a really good chocolate cake. This has good reviews on epicurious, just wondered if anyone here had tried it, and if so, what icing did you use.

Oh yes! I LOVED that cake, as did my husband and my neighbors. It makes a lot of batter though if I'm thinking the right recipe, so definitely cut it in half. I just made a ganache glaze.

Nigella Lawson's recipe? I've made it and it was OK, but you can definitely taste the stout, it's a strong, but not overwhelming flavour, but I think you have to like Guinness! I would go with something with a more wide-spread appeal like the Hershey's cake (the one with the hot coffee added), but substitute melted butter for the oil - it gives it a superior and more upmarket taste IMHO

Well, actually I might try Toba's Chocolate cake it sounds like it is a good one, with her chocolate buttercream. Any opinions about this one. I need something really good and decadent. BTW, it is a tuxedo cake that I am making for the grooms cake.

Is it this recipe?

http://www.epicurious.com/recipes/recipe_views/views/107105

If it is this cake is TO DIE FOR!!!!! OMG.. this is therapy in a cake pan. So rich and so chocolatey.. I wish I had some right now!! LOL

It does make a lot of batter so be prepared, but it's no problem because it is so good. We eat it with out any frosting at all and it's good. I have made this for a few peoplw and when I did i torted it and filled it with dark chocolate mousse and smothered the whole thing in dark chocolate ganache and served it with a raspberry coulis. SOOOOOOO good. The cake in my photos with the chocolate roases is this cake.. I was turned on to this recipe by txkat.. THANK YOU AGAIN BTW!! icon_wink.gif

I am a chocolate freak (my wedding cake was chocolate fudge cake with chocolate buttercream and chocolate ganache in between the layers and more ganache poured outside) so I didn't find this cake decadent and rich, if that's what you're looking for. The beer is noticable when its first cooked but mellows out the next day. It IS a good cake, but not chocolate-y. You could up the richness with a chocolate stout (trader joes has a double chocolate). I repeat though it was a GOOD cake.

I made it and really liked it. My children liked it also. My neighbor fell in love with it as well. They get all my leftovers so I don't gain a thousand pounds. Anyway, We topped with a chocolate ganache. It doesn't really have a beer taste. I made it with special dark cocoa. So mine was chocolaty.

This sounds good, but I have no idea what beer to use. I know nothing about beer except that it stinks. Do I go to the licquor store and ask for a dark beer and can I please just have one bottle? LOL So does the beer flavor diminish completely and just leave it really really moist? I used to make beer bread years ago and we like that.

I have made the wasc cake with a DH dark chocolate fudge mix and it was wonderful. I used a dk choc ganache to ice it. Yum!

Try Guinness Stout beer, most grocery stores carry it.

Thank you MissRobin! I see you are in Missouri. I driving down to Kimberling City next week to stay with a girlfriend for several days. By the map I see that's a ways from you, but I'm sure looking forward to the trip. I need a get away.
Have a great weekend!
Carol

That's interesting, After my Dad retired, he and my mom managed a campground during the summer on Tablerock Lake real close to Kimberling City, so I have been there many times. Where in Kansas are you, I used to live in Shawnee Mission, back in the early 80's, seems like lightyears ago! LOL! Have a great trip!

I have never tried this recipe but I do love a good dark or stout beer from time to time, so this I may have to tinker with. I have a great recipe for a chocolate cake made with Port Wine...yum...and I'm not a huge wine drinker.

You just put into words my exact problem with finding a chocolate cake recipe that I LOVE. I'm also a chocolate FANATIC/snob haha! and can't seem to find a recipe that tastes like one of those yummy flourless chocolate cakes, but is fluffy like butter cake.

Chocolate cake seems so subjective. Some people like them light and more sweet and some like them heavier and more "bittersweet" chocolat-y flavor.

Sigggghhh .... the quest for the perfect chocolate cake continues!

I have not tried this Stout cake recipe, but it's "in the que" to try. Right now, the closest I've found to perfect chocolate cake is the Whimsical Bakehouse Chocolate Butter Cake. It's even better with some kahlua brushed on the layers.

I just made the stout cake and it was absolutely wonderful. Very moist and the beer was barely noticable. You would have to know it's there to be able to distinguish it. My husband loved this cake. Will definetly put into my recipe collection!
