Ok, so I'm looking at the iced cake that I did last night for a client. I had thought about the design and coloring all day yesterday while at work and just knew it would be so elegant. It's for a church supper tonight. I rushed home and made my icing and spent 2 hours on it. For me it's just missing the mark somehow. It iced easily except for the final smoothing but I just moved on from there. Has anyone else finished decorating a cake then stepped back and said 'ugh' what happened? It's not what I envisioned! I hope my client likes it and doesn't sense my disapointment when I deliver it. I haven't taken a photo yet but will when it gets light outside this morning and post it. Pam from Bama
Yip i can relate to that.. i had a vision for a topsy turvey cake was meant to be 3 tiers well that went wrong to start with so only ended up with 2 and then it wasnt as sharp as i would have liked... partly i think coz i not sure on how deep to cut into the bottom one for the next one to sit in etc... luckily it was for hubby and i, our wedding anniversary and not a client i probably would have cried...
This happens to me also. There seems to be a disconnect between the vision, execution, and the final product. One thing that helps me is to try to sketch out the vision on paper. If I can get it out of my head and on paper, it makes it a little easier sometimes. However, the best laid plans don't always work out...especially for me!
I think we are all our own best and worst critics! It happens to me all the time. I am lucky in that I have my boys and my husband to tell me what it is or isn't missing. They can be brutally honest. If you have someone around like that, utilize them! Don't worry though. I am confident that your client will love it!
I can relate! Your pictures in your gallery are beautiful, I can't imagine that someone wouldn't like your cakes. I am always nervous until I deliver it and see what their reaction is. I can't wait to see the picture.
It might not be what you envisioned, but I can't imagine it missing the mark with your customer. Your cakes are great!
Ok here it is. The morning light didn't do anything to improve my outlook. I think it's the green color. It's got a florescent glow to it or something. Also I used 3 layers that I torted to make 6 with icing inbetween. Maybe it's just too many layers. I always think of Sarah Lee cakes and how pretty they look so I'm making torted layers my trademark. Pam from Bama
I can assure the the customer will love it. It is so pretty. I can see nothing wrong with the color. Walk away from the cake.........
I think it is a very pretty spring cake. The color is bright but not glow in the dark or obnoxiously green. Relax....we are our own worst critics and sometimes fail to see the individuality and simple beauty our own cakes have because they don't fit "our own" mental image we started with!
Okay, FIRST of all! 4:43 AM!!!! Tell me you weren't up all night worrying over this! The cake is lovely! It's bright and cheery! I love daisies. They say Happy to me! Whenever I send flowers to someone to cheer them up....I send daisies!

Thanks everyone. I appreciate your kind words of encouragement. It is what it is. Pam from Bama
That is a really cute cake! I think that they will love it. I see no problems with it at all. Just remember that we are our own worst critic!
I LOVE it, and you client will also.
It looks refreshing, cool and simply yummy!!!!!!!!!!!!
Be proud
i think it looks very nice, i would be happy if you had made it for me. what did you use to emboss the fondant on the ribbon? i like that pattern.
My client absolutley loved the cake! Color and all. I guess all my worries were just paranoid. I used some plastic embossers from Makens clay for the fondant ribbon. Thanks for all you encouraging words and support. Pam from Bama
Like someone mentioned above I find it really helpful to sketch out what is in my head and colour it in with pencils. This means I have a pattern to follow when I start.
First of all I love your cake eapecially the color but I can understand how you feel. My last cake was a huge disapointment for me because it was nothing like I envisioned. I spent a long time planning a carousel cake for my mom but when it came time to make it everything that could go wrong did. My son ATE my first horse(he's now buried in my back yard), the texture of the fondant was off, the buttercream wasn't turning out, etc, etc. I ended up having to change my design because I just ran out of time. It turned out all right in the end but a part of me will always be diapointed.
I really like your cake! And I love that green.
When I am trying to get a particular look, it's always easier when I sketch it out - I do mine on the computer, with colors and all, so I have something to match when mixing icing.
I've found that when I just have something in my head, it never comes out how I thought. But when I do a layout and print-out, it's usually much closer.
