Here goes another NEWBIE question!!!!! Can someone please tell me how or what I'd need to make edible images on cakes. Remember take me slow (remember I'm new to cakes all together). If there are any easy ways to do it without spending a fortune up front. icon_wink.gif

Thanks in advance

I would like to learn too. I am doing my first one for father's day. I asked the local grocery store if they would print it for me and they said yes. This is much cheaper than buying one off the internet.

To start making your own, you'd need a new compatible inkjet printer like the Canon iP3000 or iP1500 or even the MP130 if you also needed a scanner ($50-$100). The MP130 can be purchased online at OfficeMax. The others you'd have the best luck finding on eBay. Then you'd need edible paper (frosting sheets) and edible ink cartridges to fit your printer. Those supplies can be found at several online sites. I buy from www.kopykake.com Start-up costs can be as little as $110 depending on which printer you choose.

I also think it's important to have good graphics software. You'll want to tweak colors, correct things, resize images, etc. I had the scanner and software anyway - just had to get the printer, ink and frosting sheets. If you've already got the extras, then you're halfway there. If you think you will only do one occasionally, you'd come out a lot cheaper having the store do it for you. I'm kind of a control freak, though. I need to be able to control the end product, so for me, there was no question about whether I would do my own - regardless of cost. I've had my system about 3 months, and I'm already into my second package of frosting sheets and have used several pages of wafer paper in addition. So, I figure my system has pretty much paid for itself. You've got to weigh all aspects of it. I wouldn't take anything for my system. I'm sooooo glad I did it!

I am a newbie too and just made my first cake with an edible image. I bought the image off ebay, it was a little expensive ($8-$9), but worth it. Also, you can get them at some bakeries and Wal-mart. Just call around and ask.

It was very easy to use. I put the image on a cookie sheet in the freezer right before I started icing the cake. Then as soon as I finished icing it, I took the image out of the freezer and applied it to the cake. You need to apply the image before the buttercream crusts.

It was really simple.

Hope this helps,
Sharon
