I have a graduation cake that has to be done in silver and blue. How do I get buttercream silver? Also, how do I make the tassle silver (I will be using fondant).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
Tammy: http://baking911.com/decorating/tinting.htm I believe these are Wilton colors--I only have a few Wiltons so some of the names look familiar.
You cannot make silver icing. There is no silver color. You need to make gray and paint with silver luster dust.
check out my pics; there is a car painted with silver luster dust. I just made a light gray and painted the silver on. It doesn't really matter though; You could leave it white b/c the silver will cover it up I think
You can use the silver luster dust on fondant (tint it grey first). You won't be able to color the buttercream silver though. Here's a film canister I did w/ luster dust. I also have painted luster dust on buttercream (see my heart cake in gallery), but this would only work for like detail work...
Hope that helps!
I just saw a robot cake in a book at my local cake decorating supply store recently that was silver. I too was interested to see how they got it silver. The directions said to tint the frosting light grey and then sprinkle the silver luster dust over the top. they said to do this by either putting some on the end of a full brush and shaking it or putting a small amount in your hand and blowing it off. It like the first idea better - seems more sanitary.
This would work if you had to cover a large area. You might be able to acheive the same result in smaller area by using a small brush.
