The only way I've been able to get true red, was to add a whole bottle of th Wilton paste to only 1 to 2 cups of icing. Yep, it took the whole bottle for that little amount.

Use americolor icing colors....that doesn't help, does it. LOL.

For the future, start with a dark pink then tint the pink to red. For now, if you can go out to the store, buy some of the wilton tube icing in red and mix that in, then more red paste if you still need more. Be careful though, even the no taste red can get bitter. Also remember that the color will deepen. If you have time, leave a thick smear of it on a paper plate overnight to see what the color will be.

Really though, consider getting the americolor red and black in the future, they take a LOT less coloring to get a true hue. Good Luck

What if I add a little bit of black?

I don't think that will work. Did you let it sit a while to see if the color would deepen? If usually gets darker if you let it sit for an hour or so in a covered bowl.

Sometimes, I add some burgandy to my red to get it darker and more of a true red. Add it a little at a time and wait for the color to change before adding more.

Also, start with a dark pink........HTH

Bakers Preferred- I carries this brand. It make a really red icing and found that it really does make the best, deepest red with the least amount of food coloring. This is really a great product. You don't have to use much of it to get a good, deep red so the aftertaste from the food coloring isn't really noticeable.

I agree, Wilton red just never gets red. I use Lucks colors, I love them!

But for now, you will have to just keep piling in the wilton color..it will eventually get red...

Thank you everyone for your help...I finally got it to work after adding some ready made red icing and letting it sit for an hour or so...here's the final result (not as deep red as I was hoping for but close enough).

Step light - what color red does that come out? Do you start with a dark chocolate of light chocolate frosting?

If you don't mind having a flavored BC, you can add unsweetened red kool-aid and get a very nice red. I did that once to make decorations with and it worked out very well.
