Help! I ran out of veg. oil for a boxed cake I am making. I have half of what the recipe calls for. Can I substitute another oil instead of vegetable? Can I use butter? If I only use half of the oil what would happen to the cake itself? Would it be as moist? Are there any suggestions?? Thanks so much! *The Rookie*

YOu can sub applesauce for oil; you can use another kind of oil; and it seems to me there was a thread the other day for someone asking about subbing butter for oil, and it turned out ok; just melt the butter.

Correcting post:1 cup of veg oil = 1 cup applesauce OR 1 cup fruit puree

This is the best substitution page ever, I use it all the time;

When I make boxed cakes - I automaticlly cut my oil down to 1 tablespoon as oppose to what the amount says - especially if the cake mix has added pudding in it.

I never found this to affect the moistness of the cake and it makes it a lot more firmer when I go to decorate - especially when I am putting layers together.
