How Far In Advance Can I Make/color Mmf?

I have to make a ton of it for a June 3 wedding, and color it a periwinkle color. The wedding is out of town, and I'm having to make everything for it in advance so I can get it done once I get there. I'm trying to get my timeline worked out, so how far in advance can I make the mmf? Color it?

I asked this question last week and was told that it would be fine to do a couple weeks in advance. I'm doing cutouts today for a cake I'll be decorating on Memorial Day. DH and I have been laughing about the half-life of fondant. He even asked if he could use it to repair a hole in his boots (lol!) It does seem like pretty durable stuff.

Personally I have found that my MMF works best if it's fresh. Now, If I were just doing cut outs or other decorations, I wouldn't have a problem with making it in advance. But this is just my personal experience.

Do you mean fresh as in just made, or a day or two old? I tried to roll out some mmf that was two weeks old and it wasn't as pliable as fresher mmf.

Also, if you have to color a lot of it it's much eaier to color the marshmallows before you add the sugar to it.

I've got some I've had for a couple of months. It does get harder...no doubt about thet. But, just pop the whole wad into the microwave for 20-30 seconds. It'll soften up. Then, knead a good-sized glob of Crisco into it - maybe a couple of tablespoons. That will KEEP it softer even when it returns to room temp.

Okay, I may be crazy, but I like to use mine about an hour after I make it. I'll have to try the trick of microwaving + crisco.

I wasn't sure if I could do it a few weeks in advance and leave it colored or not. Guess I'll do a batch and see how much the color changes the longer it sits. I just used some for a practice tier Sunday that was over a month old, but it was mostly white, and I just colored a little of it. I mocrowaved it and used the Crisco and it was fine to work with, just didn't know how long it could sit after it was colored. Thanks!

Hey! I still have MMF from over a month ago (there's nothing in it that will spoil and like Crimsicle said - you just microwave it and knead in some Crisco and it's like new!) in all sorts of colors and nothing has faded so far. That includes dark red, black, gray, orange, etc. I have heard that some blues and violets tend to fade a lot faster than other colors, so if you can, you may want to consider a small batch of periwinkle, wait a week or so and see how it does color wise. It's worth a shot! Good luck!

My colors don't fade at all if I freeze the mmf. Then you can let it thaw and microwave it to soften it.
