I just bought a tub of wilton piping gel and noticed that it says it can be used to "glaze cakes before icing". Has anyone tried this? Does it work? How much gel would you need to cover an 8" 2 layer cake? Suggestions please!!!! icon_biggrin.gif

I have heard of using it, but have never tried it because I don't care for the taste of piping gel. I usually crumbcoat with buttercream. But a lot of cake decorators I know use apricot glaze or apple jelly with when cover ing their cakes with marzipan.

I use the piping gel on all my cakes. I haven't notice any difference on the taste of the cakes. It works great!!! I bake the cake the night before I need it, slather the gel on it and let it sit out overnight to "dry". My icing goes on so easy!!! This really helps keep the moisture in the cake, too. I've used it on the last 4 or 5 cakes that I've done. Not sure of the amount you would need. The cake that I did with the unicorn on it used 2 tubs of piping gel.
