Hello friends!

I have another wedding cake coming up on June 9th. The design will be fairly simple...stacked squares with edible pearls and scrolls. The bride would like fresh roses on top and petals coming down the sides and around the board on the table.

The wedding will be at her house and I will be putting the roses on the cake.

How long will the roses last after I put them on the cake??? Can I buy the roses the day before and keep them in water overnight??? Should I buy the roses the day of the wedding??? She will not be having a lot of roses for the cake.

I just want to make sure the roses will not start wilting during the reception.

Any advice would be appreciated! Thanks as always! icon_biggrin.gif

I've bought roses a day in advance, prepared them the morning of the wedding, and kept them in a cool place (aout 3 hours) before putting them on the cake an hour before the wedding. They were fine sitting on the cake for another 2 hours before the cake was cut. It was a hot day but the room (where the cake was) was airconditioned, otherwise I think the roses would've drooped.

Did you keep them in water overnight and prior to putting them on the cake???

Also...did you buy them from a floral shop or someplace like Walmart??? I have seen pretty red roses at Walmart...and was wondering if it would be ok to purchase them from there. icon_smile.gif

Thanks!

It depends on how open you need them to be. I would buy them 2-3 days in advance, trim the stems and place them in a 5 gallon bucket of water so that they can open.

You can buy some beautiful flowers from Sam's Club or Costco if you have one of those, and sometimes at Wal Mart. If you go through a florist, you will pay their retail price which you will have to pass on to your customer.

yes, I say go for it with the wal-mart roses........just make sure you get the freshest possible....and like was already said get them a day or two ahead of time and they'll open nicely......it also helps a great deal to keep them refrigerated, but don't let them freeze....(sometimes the back of your fridge will freeze things) or they'll get soggy and droop.......I had roses for decoration on my wedding cake.....I bought them at wal-mart LOL (last min. long story short, place I ordered them from tried to give me old wilted ones ) anyhow, I just stuck them between the layers of cake and they were fine.....I did this before the ceremony and everything, so they probably sat there for 4 hrs. or so before the cake was cut and not one wilted whatsoever!! I think you'll be fine.

Sorry for the late reply. Yes, remove about 3/4 of the leaves (so that no leaves will be underwater), trim the stems (make a new stem-end cut at an angle while holding it in water) and put 'em in a bucket of water. I've heard that a cup of 7-up/Sprite, or couple o' aspirin dissolved in the water helps keep 'em fresh longer, but I've never tried it.

I bought them at a wholesale florist since there's no Walmart where I was.
