No, because there's no way of adding enough red food coloring to get the chocolate mix red. You'd end up with a mess. I don't know what would happen if you mixed the two together before starting, and adding the ingredients in... I probably wouldn't recommend it though.

The Cake Mix Doctor has a recipe for red velvet cake that starts with a german chocolate mix. I made it for a friend who said it was very good. If you'd like it just PM me.

Red velvet is a light chocolate with lots of food coloring. Yes, you can mix your boxes together with more coloring - how do you think us scratch bakers do it?

I use the German chocolate base cake mix and add 1 oz of red food coloring to it! My customers love it!

i was told red velvet isnt just red chocolate cake in another post a couple of weeks ago. So whats the real verdict? is it really just red dyed chocolate cake?

i have an amazing chocolate cake recipe and have never tried red velvet and would love to try red velvet but what is the difference besides the coloring?

I was told that red velvet cake is a mild chocolate tasting cake that is just really red in color. To be quite honest with you, the red color is what red velvet is all about. It compliments with cream cheese filling or frosting very good! I've even made it with a white chocolate mousse! Ok now I'm hungry! icon_biggrin.gif
