Title says it all!! I have to do a bridal shower cake and I want the quilted look on the sides, but I'm not sure how to do it.
Thanks so much!
Andrea
This effect is done with what is called an Impression mat.You can purchase them at Sugarcraft.com,Earlene Moores.com,Countrykitchensa.com
It is called the diamond impression mat and you press it onto the icing after it has crusted. They cost about $5.00 -$20.00 for a really good one.

There a cake here that shows how to do this check it out.
I used a yardstick and a roofer's triangle thingy from the hardware store, but you can bet that next time I will use an impression mat!!!! Talk about time consuming!
Hey there - if you click on my photos - you'll see one I did with a prince crown on a pillow, and the pillow has the quilted effect. After I put the fondant on, I used the Wilton wheel embosser tool (the wheel with the little squares to look like stitching) and just rolled it over the top. Or, you can also see the fan cake where I did a quilted look on the top tier with pearls at the joins - that I did with an impression mat. But if you can't find an impression mat in time to do your cake, try using the Wilton wheel because it has a "staight" edge wheel too, and you can use a ruler as a guide to make sure you do straight, even lines. So it depends what type of look you're going for. Hope that helps!

I read a post where someone said they bought the diamond stamps and just pressed them on the sides of the cake. I bought the mat but it's a square and too complicated. I would like to know where to buy the stamp.
Hello, it's me again. Just wanted to add this tutorial from The Australian Women's Weekly cookbook on how to make the quilts on the cake. This was the inspiration to the wedding cake I made.
I've never thought about marking the diamonds before placing the fondant on the cake. I would imagine it would be hard to center the fondant just exactly right so that you have the top and bottom of the diamond positioned correctly. Has anyone else tried it this way? I've done fondant cakes, but not extensively, so maybe this is easier than it looks. But the end result is beautiful!
