Is there a way to get black buttercream without actually using black paste or gel?

For black i usually use Wilton's ready-to-use icing tubes. It comes in black and doesn't taste bad. I have done black by starting w/chocolate icing (also wilton's Ready-To-Use Decorator Icing - 1 lb. Can) and adding Wilton's icing colors (tiny bottles). The taste will be like light chocolate and the color will be black enough. I just try to use what's easier and faster for me. I don't usually start a buttercream icing from scratch. My cakes are always for family. I'm tight w/time so i just look for the easy way out. HTH

Thanks, I also found this on sugarcraft. ---MIXING COLORS: All colors are derived from only 3 colors: RED, YELLOW and BLUE. A combination of equal parts of RED, YELLOW and BLUE equal BLACK. That doesn't mean the SAME amount of each color. It does mean the same STRENGTH of each. If you end up with an off-color, just add a bit more of one or the other. It is not always as easy to achieve the exact shade of color you desire by mixing a combination of colors. --- Anyone tried this before?

To be nosey, why don't you want to use a paste or gel?
