Any tips on how to make a doll cake? Specifically icing and piping. My girlfriend at work is having a birthday next week and I would like to make the doll cake mounted on a round or square cake underneath. What size base cake ( 10", 12") would you suggest and would it make a difference if if was round, square or heart shaped. Your ideas and thoughts are most welcome.
I used a 12 inch under mine, you can look in my photos it is the Cinderella cake. I as so put an 8 inch round under the wonder mold to give the doll more height.
Hi Sue_Dye,
Wow, you have done a couple of doll cakes before! They are all so beautiful and certainly Cinderella was by far the best. I've only done one fondant cake (in Course 3 right now), how forgiving is fondant when it comes to icing with BC on it. Once I get it on there, well is that it? I know I had a problem with water spots when I applied small squiggelies to the sides of my cake (you can see in my photos). Am I going to have the same problem icing the fondant? You said you put an 8 inch under the wonder mold...was there a gap between the two or did the sides meet evenly? I guess what I am asking - is the diameter of the bottom of the wonder mold the same as the diameter of the 8". If not, how did you fill in the gap. Sorry for the long post - would appreciate your advice.
Sue,
I just wanted to say all your cakes are wonderful and very detailed.
Also do you use a full body doll or the ones Wilton sells?
Thanks,
Cecilia

Thank you, I have used both the full doll and the wilton doll pick. The Cindarella cake in my photos is a full size doll.
The 8" round should line up with the wonder mold. If not, you can fill in any gaps with BC before putting on your fondant. In my pics is A tinkerbell doll cake. There's an 8" under there. They just wanted more cake.
Thank you so much Kittiskakes, loved your photos and especially your Tinkerbell. Wish me luck!
Fondant is wonderful on doll cakes. It holds up fine with BC decorations. I have attached some photos to prove it.
As for base cake, it depends on the look you are going for and how many darlings you are feeding. If you want the cake to extend the length of the skirt then I prefer an 8 or 10 tapered. Otherwise you could put her on a pedastal and the cake on the bottom can be any size or shape as long as it is larger than the wondermold base. I would stack the pan and see what I liked.

I have made Barbie cakes using 2 round bundt cakes. Stacked one on top of the other they are the perfect height and the doll fits great in the center holes. My bundt pan also has a scallop design on it which provides a wavyness when you ice it. Got the idea from Martha Stewart!
Good Luck,
Dolly
I've used both BC and fondant. I prefer the fondant because BC is a little messy to clean off her
