So a friend of a friend has asked me to do her baby's first birthday cake. I'm making a 1/2 sheet cake with FBCT of the Sesame Street characters. I also said I could do a 6" smash cake with a FBCT but I'm not sure how to add that into my total. Do you all look at it as like a packaged deal or do you charge as a seperate cake? I'm pretty sure I'm WAY undercharging for the big cake but I was just looking for the right approach so I can give her a final total tommorrow before I shop.

Free. I always give it for free. You are only 1 once.

Thanks guys that's kind of what I was thinking. My DH keeps giving me a hard time for not charging enough for my cakes so I told him I'd check. Now I have proof I'm not just being a softy.

If the smash cake is simple, it's free. If they want more detailed decorations I charge $5 for it. It also depends on the customer. If I have had good experiences with the customer, it's usually free.

Sometimes someone comes across as demanding and expecting a lot for a little bit of money, I charge them.

This is what I used to do anyway. I'm not in the business of selling anymore. Just competitions.

Husbands are good for that. They love us and protect us. My husband gives me a hard time about all my cakes. If he had his way, I'd be charging 10x. I don't think they understand the pleasure we get from baking and decorating.

All of our local bakeries throw in the smash cake for no charge. Have fun!!

I do them for free, however I've switched to a 4" cake for smash cakes now. They are so cute!

Free! I also would make a smaller cake - 4" or 5" is plenty for a 1 year old.

For a 1 year old...I always do it for free....and I tell the customer...it is my gift to the little ONE....
and if 2 or older, they are $5. I also only do a 4 inch now...the 6 inch is way too much cake for the price..LOL.
Oh...the smash cake is the tiny personal cake for the birthday child...seperate from the big cake for everyone else

Ditto Sugarbean, $5 or less! A smash cake is the little matching cake you make when making a 1 year old's bigger party cake. The birthday boy or girl then gets their own cake to "smash!"

I did one w/ a football theme (posted), and the smash cake was the football on top. The mom took it off, gave it to him and was sweet enough to send me pictures of the little guy digging into it. It was so cute!

I just do a little one layer 4 inch cake as the smash cake and take a little from the rest of the cake to do it. It really doesn't take much batter at all. It's a free gift for the little one

My smash cakes are free for all 1st birthdays. I just do a single layer 4" or 5" round, decorated in the same colors as the main cake. I never do anything very elaborate, decoration-wise ... after all, it's just going to be smashed!!!
