Faux Stems Through Cake Look?

Hey everyone! I'm wondering if anyone here knows how to create those cakes that look like there are stems separating one tier from the next. The examples I've seen use calla lilys, but I would like to create one using tulips. Any advice would be most welcome!!!!!

I don't know how they do that, but I would certainly like to know also. There was a discussion earlier about those cakes, and they also gave some links to view some, and I've got to say that they are so BEAUTIFUL. It just looks real! Or is it? I don't know, but I'll keep a watch on this topic. icon_smile.gif

lol, as it so happens, my birthday is coming up, but the cake is for my best friend's bridal shower. =)
