I think it depends on the teacher and where you take it. I took mine a few years ago at a community college. They got all the supplies, I just showed up. They did give great tips for cake baking, smoothing etc..

We did learn the rose and a few other flowers, the drop and the lily of the valley I think...

As far as coloring my teacher did not make us buy the gels, but I think you will find that they are far better than liquids. They tend to thin out your icing and are not true color matches. For some flowers, like the rose it helps to learn with a stiff consistancy of icing, again something you will learn if you choose to take the class...

With all that said...I have a good friend who is self taught and is a great cake decorator. She picked up the book and just went to town..

GOOD LUCK!

I just finished Wilton course I and am starting on course II tomorrow. You will need to purchase supplies and bring in your own frosting and bake cakes...I loved it. You learn the infamous rose in the first course, which was fun.

I think it has been very helpful and I have learned alot...and yes, the instructor is the key.

Good luck!!

If you are talking at a local craft store, then unless they told you other wise, just go tomorrow with a pen and some paper if you want to take notes. Lesson 1 is Demo time for the teacher. She/He will show you how to make the icing, torte the cake and ice it. As well as tell you about different wilton products and what you will need for the class.

They will suggest the paste colors as they do not change the consitancy (unless you are making a deep/dark color) of your icing.

Yes, you will learn the Wilton Rose. You start it in Lesson 2 by making the base. In lesson 3 you will do the center patal and in lesson 4 you will complete.

You also learn about outlining, stars, writing, shell border, zigzag, finger piping (clowns and faces), drop flowers, leaves, sweet peas and bows.

Since I am an instructor, of course I am going to say that the classes are worth it. icon_wink.gif I took my first class in 2001 and I have always said it started my obcession of cake decorating. I think the Wilton classes are great from learning the basics and they also give you a chance to be around others that enjoy the same thing. icon_smile.gif
