I have done everything with MMF that I have done with fondant. I have not used gumpaste yet. I want everything to be edible and somewhat tasty so I have only used MMF...I used wilton fondant for a while but after making the MMF recipe from this website and tasting the difference, I think I will stick to the MMF. I have made ribbon roses and different shapes but I have not made people or intricate things out of the MMF. I have a baby shower comin' up and I wanna make a little baby so we'll see how the MMF works for that real soon!

I just tried mmf for the 1st time today. icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif okay the 2nd (the 1st batch didn't turn out but was my fault icon_redface.gif ). I just used it on a practice cake and I love it. Even DH loves the taste. Haven't finished decorating it yet but wanted to try it out. Never used fondant at all. It wasn't as hard as i envisioned it.

P.S. Wanted to thank ntertaynme for her tutorial here on cc. Excellant step by step instructions. Thanks. icon_biggrin.gifthumbs_up.gif

What do you all think about using MMF to cover cookies? I would use the same cookie cutter as for my cookie to cut out the design and cover the cookie (assume have to use some sort of icing to hold MMF in place). Have any of you tried this?

I haven't tried using MMF for covering a cake. I'm not sure my friends and family would go for it. I have used MMF, Wilton Fondant and Gumpaste for making figures. I think the MMF was probably the easiest to work with. I like gumpaste, but it seemed to dry much quicker and sometimes would start to wrinkle before I would get done sculpting the piece. the Wilton fondant is convenient, but much more expensive than the MMF. I am by no means an expert, but I suggest you make some and play around with it. It's good therapy!!

Love the MMF!! I've used it in the same applications as Wilton and I find it much more forgiving and capable of handling humidity. Not to mention it just tastes better!!! I can't get my family to eat the Wilton stuff--just not pleasant.

As for figure modeling, I haven't tried gumpaste, but I would imagine it works just as well. It does dry alot quicker and harder than fondant, so if you want the figures to last as a keepsake, gumpaste would be the way to go. I've only used gumpaste for flowers and found that you can roll it much thinner than fondant without breaking.

Don't know if my experiences help you at all--I'm sure there are many people here who have been at this alot longer than me!

do you mold it just like if you were playing with play-do?

Gosh I feel like such a dummy!

Don't feel like a dummy, if you don't ask you will never know!!

Yes you just mold it like you were playing with play-do or clay. BTW, clay directions are great to use (modified) with fondant.

Usually when I am making a figure I will do fondant (Wilton premade) mixed with gum tex. If I don't add the gum tex then I have problems with the shapes flattening out as they dry.

You can also mix your fondant with gumpaste. So you get a medium that will dry faster than just fondant (which means it will hold its shape better), but will give you time to work with it as you are forming your piece.

I haven't used MMF for this purpose, since I like the ease of just opening a package. I also don't worry about the taste of it for this purpose as
most people will not actually eat your pieces, unless they are small. Most of the time they are going to end up being saved.

Momlittr, you certainly can use it for cookies. I use the same cutter as I made the cookie with, it's fine since the cookies grow a little when they bake. There are star cookies in my photos with fondant on them!
