I have curious cats, so for sanitary reasons I keep my projects in the oven while they set. I piped some royal icing figures a few days in advance and put them in the oven to dry. Each day I worked on a little bit more, over the course of three days. After almost cooking a cake twice, I decided to be smart and put a "check oven" note on the oven knob. I put it over the knob as I'm easily distracted. The night before I was to bake my cake, my husband used the oven. Apparently, when he did this, he moved the sticker over. So even though the sticker was right next to the knob, when I went to bake my cake I turned it on without taking my figures out. Luckily, my husband discovered them before they smoked up the kitchen, but not before they were puddles. Ugh! Since this was the day before the cake was to be made, I didn't have enough time to remake the figures and have them hard enough to use. I had to use more than one plan B on this cake, but it still turned out cute.
I'm probably not the only to have this happen to, so I sympathize with those that have done this.
I've never thought to use the oven for storage, probably for that reason. I put my stuff in a box and move it somewhere the kids won't get to it.
SOrry that happened!!
My cats don't get into sweets but you can't let meat defrost on the counter and the other day I was thawing salmon and turned the oven on. After a while I could smell the melting plastic.
