Can anyone tell me how to get a two-tone look to icing? I want to get light brown/dark brown tones to my icing to create the look of land for an "army battle" scene my 5 yr old wants. I don't need it to consistently look the same, but want more than one flat color. Should I just not stir the icing color consistently into the white icing, or is there some other trick I don't know about? Thanks!

I read in the Whimsical Bakehouse book that you use a spatulas to spread the colors together.Like over lapping. The WBH house BC is really soft so it mixes really nicely.

How about adding the color to the icing and only stir it to incorporate the color a little bit. Or pipe out the icing colors and then spread them together.

If you're doing a flat finish, I have a tip!! I did this with a sky/cloud cake. I applied and smoothed out one color of light blue, letting it dry slightly. I then made up a slightly darker shade of blue and applied it in patches. I thinned it and smoothed it to where it did not look like patches but just color changes.

It went over tremendously well!!
