When you do your pricing, how do you charge for the top layer if they are going to save it rather than serve it? Do you charge for it if you do your pricings by servings? Or do you give it for 'free,' adding the cost in somewhere else?

I don't do wedding cakes. Have only done one so far, and that was for family so pricing wasn't an issue. I'm meeting with someone tomorrow about a cake so I thought I would ask and see what others do in this case.

I, personally, do not charge for the top tier. Traditionally, it is considered to be the keepsake tier. I consider it to be my gift to the bride on her special day.

Same here - I don't charge for it and make sure you don't add it to the total servings, I forgot that the first time.

I do charge for the top tier. However...I give my brides a free cake at their consultation. I like for them to have extra to take home with them in case the husband to be does not come to the meeting.

However, I can see where some decorators might not charge for it. I feel like I am giving them such a great deal it does not matter! icon_wink.gif
