Hello everyone. Hope you all are doing today.

My question is for those who use fondant often, or fondant at all. Has anyone ever complained to you about the flavor? While I've only worked with MMF, I want to try and use real fondant on a cake I wll be making this month.

My fear is, that the person I am making the cake for will be turned off by the flavor of the fondant.

I will have to buy some and try it, but I just wanted to know what anyone elses experiences with this were.

Thanks!

Carmen

Carmen,
I have not had any complaints on it before though I haven't used it a whole lot. I know some people have said that it is too sweet but I cover the cake with enought buttercream under the fondant that they can peel off the fondant and still have icing. I have used Satin Ice and FondX and I love them both. The FondX is my new favorite since trying that because it has a really nice light vanilla flavor and it is not too sweet. It is also great to work with. The company that makes the FondX also makes a white chocolate brand of fondant and that is super yummy too! I would give it a try and see what you think. You can order the Satin Ice from pretty much any supply place (I have gotten mine from www.thebakerskitchen.com) and FondX and the white chocolate brand can be ordered from www.caljavaonline.com or I know Pfiel and Holing (www.cakedeco.com) carries it too and its cheaper there.
Good Luck,
Heather

MMF is marshmellow fondant. Its a homemade fondant that I have heard is supposed to be great to work with and have a better taste than regular fondant. I have never tried it myself.

Thank you Heather. I will have to try making it this weekend.

I made a batch last night. It was good but not my favorite. It was too sweet.

I personally don't like the taste of Wilton fondant and have found very very few people that do. The MMF does taste better but I had a difficult time working with it - I think I didn't really need to add the entire 2lbs of sugar and it was too dry.

The first time I ever tried fondant it was the Wilton brand and I thought how in the world can anyone eat this stuff!! I thought I will never use fondant on anything. Then I looked around and found the far superior brands that I use today. Wilton's is okay if you want a cheap fondant that you can use for practice but I would never feed it to anyone.

I made three different kinds of fondant last week end to see which was easier to make and easier to work with. MMF won hands down. All three set out overnight. The MMF was extremely hard, but microwaved, it becomes soft. I had to microwave it longer than the recipe said, so don't give up. It was a dream to work with - was prettier on the cake than the rolled fondant, and tasted better. I also made the buttercream fondant, but it was way too soft to use - tasted better, but couldn't be rolled out.

I am currently experimenting with different recipes and techniques so I'll tell you a little bit of what I have discovered along my journey.

I made the marshmallow for the third time. This time I used cornstarch and rolled it out on vinal. I did have some fine cracks which I didn't like.

Marshmallow is my least favorite tasting. It tastes okay, but there are better recipes available. The marshmallow is very easy to make out of all that I have tried.

Additionally, I have a big wooden spoon from Williams Sonoma that works great for making fondant. It really helps you get in the powdered sugar so your hands don't get as messy.
