I'm supposed to make a 9 x 13 cake for a baby shower. The mom to be would like chocolate but most of the guests apparently like vanilla. There will only be about 12 people there and I don't want to make this cake to costly as I don't want to charge too much but I don't want to lose money on it either.....anyway icon_confused.gif .....is there a way that I can use a vanilla cake mix...mabe with an extender or something and then make 1/2 of the batter chocolate. Does anyone have any suggestions? Help please!!!

TIA
Cindy

If it was for a stranger then the cost might not be to much of a concern but a friend asked me to do it and I feel kind of bad to charge a lot. You can get them so cheap at the grocery store.... icon_sad.gif

SInce when do the guests get to pick what kind of cake they are served? What is this world coming to?

I think a nice fudge marble is a nice compromise!

Please don't compare homemade to grocery!!!

Good luck!

yes, doable...in fact if you bought one of those marble cake mixes, that's how they do those too

divide pan w/ aluminum foil

make up your yellow cake mix

divide batter in half

half goes in as is

to other half add chocolate. can use melted chocolate, or chocolate powder w/ a bit more liquid and sugar added if don't want a dark/semisweet taste (personally I prefer semisweet). mix in well and put in other half of pan.

remove foil divider and bake.

could also just buy a marble cake mix and make it half of it chocolate using supplied chocolate packet. then put in pan as above.

yep, that's how I do it. can do any two batters you want.

same principle is used to make checkerboard cakes.

I understand trying to help a friend out, but make sure to charge what you, your time, your talent, and your supplies are worth.

I usually use 1 and a half mixes for for the 13x9. So if it was me I'd do one white mix, one chocolate mix, and use the extra from each to make some cupcakes.

I do it "to taste" (bad I know! but that is how I was taught to cook...recipes just suggestions...it's right when it tastes right)

usually two or more heaping TBS of cocoa powder -- i prefer Hershey's Special Dark or Ghiradelli.
