Hi all. WHat is the easiest way to make black frosting? Will it taste funny, like the dye if you put too much in?
Thanks for all of your advice!

Hello,
If I am making a large amount of black icing I use chocolate buttercream and add the black to that. It takes less dye and won't give it that chemical taste. If you are doing a very small amount you can use regular buttercream and just add the black. It will take quite a bit but its better than having to make chocolate buttercream for a small amount.

Heather

I agree with everything Heather said!! Usually if I have a small amount of black or red to use, I get the premixed tubes that Wilton offers. (not the best flavor but in small doses, it's not bad) I keep those two colors on hand because you need so much coloring to get it a deep black or red if you start from white. I use the chocolate and add black to big batches also! Good luck!

In the event chocolate is not an option, you can start with a brown icing then add black. (kinda like making red by starting with pink). Also, I have saved leftover BC in variety of colors then when I need black, I can mix then (get a yucky color) then add black. Of course this would require a variety of colors not just a few like say yellow, red, pink (wouldn't work)

Thank you all for your comments. The chocolate buttercream sounds interesting, I have never done that before. However the client is requesting all vanilla BC. So I will try the brown icing first then add black. Cross my fingers and go!!!!!

Thanks again.....

Make your icing in advance. With buttercream your colors will deepen the longer they sit. Try to get it a dark gray, cover it and come back to it. icon_smile.gif
