I've been asked to do make a poker theme cake for a friend for her wedding reception. I'd like to do candy molds of poker chips but cannot find a mold anywhere that's true to size. Anyone have any suggestions for finding a ready made one? I have poker chips - is there a way I can use a chip to create my own mold? Thanks!

I posted a poker theme cake in the gallery earlier today, it may help. I used the wilton fondant circle cutters by wilton, 3 sizes in a pack. I made the chips out of fondant.check out the photo in my gallery, and let me know what you think.

Your cake looks great! My friend hates fondant and has asked that I not use it on her cake anywhere, so I'm trying to figure out a way I can do these in chocolate. I found molds for cards but I'm having a horrible time finding poker chip molds.....

There is a product where you can make food safe molds from items you have.

You can find it at http://beryls.safeshopper.com/130/cat130.htm?498

I also have a poker cake posted in my photos, but I used fondant also for the cards and chips. I used the small circle of 3 also and made strips and cut the cards. Could you use marshmallow fondant or candy clay, or would she object to that also. Buttercream fondant is another possibility! Or does she know the difference?

If you have time, and some corn starch, you can do it the way some candy companies would do it. Though a bit different.

You may need to build a small wooden box to pack the corn starch into though. If you or someone you know can do this for you, then it'll help a lot.

The Corn Starch will need to be packed TIGHT into the "mold"all the way to the top. Use a spatula or cake spreader to level it out if you need to. Take a few poker chips, you can find these very cheap anywhere if you don't have any, and hot glue them to a piece of wood that's longer than the "mold" box. Place the wood with the chips over the corn starch, and press straight down. When you lift it up carfeully, you should have instant poker chips. Just let it set, and take the chips out, and if you have to, pipe the dollar amount on each one.

If you need lots, either make a large box for the mold, or repeat the process again.

Another way might be to just melt the chocolate, tempering it, and pour into some kind of 1/4, 1/2, or full sheet cake pan, and let it setup a bit. Take a small poker chip sized cookie cutter and cut your circles. Piping the amounts on as above.

Just a few thoughts.
