hi,

I am going to attempt making Royal Icing for the first time to decorate cookies. And i know that the mixing bowl needs to be completely grease free.

Can somebody tell me how to do that to my KA bowl?

thanks IA

A clean KA bowl will be fine. Plastic bowls sometimes need to be washed a couple of times to remove a greasy film on them.

Usually a run through the dishwasher or dish soap and hot water will do the trick.

Dawn dish detg. and vinegar and very hot water, after you wash it let it soak in the vinegar for a while, I always do the vin. thing a couple of times.

when you are de-greasing...don't forget the paddle attachment too!

I always rinse mine with a vinagar wash too... just swish it around the bowl, dump it out, then rinse well with hot water!

at work we rub our bowl and paddle with a half lemon. It smells great and is a natural degreaser. thumbs_up.gif

Clean bowl and wipe down with a vinegar soaked paper towel.

Before I had a dishwasher, I used to wash tools, then boil, then vinegar...hard to do all that with a bowl though. : )

Wow! I've never done any of that--I've just put it through the dishwasher as usual. Never had any problems.

Antonia74 - When making your RI recipe, am I supposed to use the paddle or the whip attachment when making RI? Your comment made me wonder. When I made it I used the whip, but didn't have any problem with air bubbles.

TIA icon_smile.gif

(love the rubbing with half a lemon tip - quick & easy...THANKS! thumbs_up.gif )

***Edited to add: Never mind...dummy me forgot about the tutorial you did...went and read thru it again & got my answer. I apologize to everyone for my terrible memory today...lol icon_redface.gif

I just wash in the dishwasher and have never had any problems. I have the coated paddle too (looks white). I make it with my paddle.

What KA speed to you all use? I think I made it last time with the slowest speed (the combine speed) and it seemed to work OK. I thought I should use 2 (mine goes in 2 increments), but that seemed too fast.

I have never washed my KA bowl down with anything other than hot water and lots of dish soap.

I always BOIL the tips and couplers though to make sure they are grease free though - you can't be sure you got all the grease film out of those tiny areas.

I use the dishwasher or I boil water on the stove and swish the water around in the bowl.

The instructions for degreasing I received while in the Wilton classes was to use hot water and vinegar.

I wash the bowl well, fill it with hot water and about 1/2 c. of white vinegar. I then dip all of the items I will use to make the royal--spatula, tips, bags (if using a non disposable one), couplers, paddle, etc.--into the bowl of water & vinegar. I dry the items with a clean paper towel and then keep them away from all of my other stuff. May be overkill to some, but I've never had a bad batch of royal doing it this way.

I am not sure of royal icing, but i've had problems with my meringue not getting aerated. I wash my bowl and beater in the dishwasher. I would assume that this method musn't remove all the grease as my meringue was a huge flop???? I only ever make my royal icing by hand as i only ever use very small amounts.
I have a 20 litre mixer. (5.28 gallons???)
