I am very new to printing edible images. I love my printer, got it about 2 months ago. But I have seen some very creative picture editing on here...briansbaker's pictures are amazing!

I would love to get started editing photos, but I am not sure where to begin. I have only had my computer since September, so I really am not a "computer geek" yet, but I like to think I have learned a lot!

Was just wondering if any of you computer-minded bakers could recommend some good programs for editing photos?

I use Photoshop for my picture editing. It's a fantastic program, but it's expensive to buy and not very user friendly, you need to do a lot of tutorials in order to use it.
Im sure there are other free programs available out there that would be easier to use.
Anyone out there know of any??

Hi gmcakes,
one thing you can do is to go to google.com and there is an area for images. You can search for any kind of image you want and it will give you pictures to choose from. Once you find the image you want, click on it and you will be able to see the actual size it will be when you print it out. When you find the right one, print it out on your frosting sheets. thumbs_up.gif

I print a lot of my edible pictures from google images. I like to save them to my computer and then use my hp program to adjust size and crop. I also love the Printmaster programs...it is very user friendly!

MrsMissey....what printmaster do you have????

I like Microsoft Picture It. It is pretty user friendly and has some really neat features.

MrsMissey...I have an older version of printmaster. I think it is 11. Do you find that yours has a good selection of clipart??? I find that some of mine are kind of dated. I am thinking of upgrading to a newer version. icon_smile.gif

..they are pretty dated but I use a lot of clipart images from the internet and then just edit and crop them in the Printmaster program!

I have the Printmaster 16 gold Version, and I love the clipart images. But, what I am really looking for is the type of program that will allow you to actually edit photos, similar to what briansbaker has done (see forum: "edible images").

She posted pics that she had edited to place a photo onto Harry Potter posters and a Spiderman picture. The pictures are amazing!!!!!

Will my PrintMaster program do this? If so, how?

Absolutely!! I edit the heck out of photos with that program. Take a looks at some of my pics...they have all been edited to various degrees. For instance....the Barney cake....I made it look as though the child was sitting on Barney's lap and Barney wasn't even in the original photo!

Mrs Missey,

I loved how you did the barney picture. I'm not sure if I know enough about computers to do that or not, but would love to try sometime.

..thanks Wilma..it's really very easy. In Printmaster, I scanned a child's photo and then did what is called a freehand crop and deleted the background. Barney was an image I found on the internet..copy/paste and then freehand cropped him as well. Pasted Barney twice...freehand cropped him a second time so that all I kept was his arm. To finish I layered the three pics..first Barney, then the child and then layered the arm on top to make it look as though Barney was hugging the child. Added some extra clipart and that was it!

Thanks Mrs. Missey,

I'm sure I understand now, now I want the edible image printer for sure. I'm possitive that you told me about icing images, and that site helped me alot. I plan on getting one in the next couple of months, but I got my airbrush for Christmas, and now this is next on my list.

..oh, you will have fun with the airbbrush too!

Yes..I am always recommending Icing Images. The owner, debbie, has been great to worth with. I have also mentioned that they may not be the cheapest priced out there but knowing that I can call or e-mail her and get answers is well worth it to me! I just love my system..I know I sound like a broken record, but it is just so much fun!

Sorry folks, I've been kind of busy and haven't checked back in much since I asked these questions. Thank you so much for the great information!!!!!!!

MrsMissey: I'm gonna have to play with that program a little more I guess! I have learned how to scan and import photos quite easily from other sources, I just didn't know how to apply that knowledge! Thank you so much, I'm going to have to try it!

I make birthday cakes for my nieces and nephews as part of their gifts, I know I can talk at least one of them into letting me try something new with their cake. (I have 5 of them with a birthday within the next 6 weeks!!!)

I am looking at getting an edible image printer but don't have any idea what to look for or what kind is best. I don't do much right now but I'm hoping to do more cakes. Could anyone tell me what I want? Thanks for any help!

Reno...You will need to get a canon printer that is compatible with edible inks and paper. I have the canon ip3000. Other printers that are popular are the ip1500 and ip4000. icon_smile.gif

reno: It has to be a printer completely dedicated for just this purpose. Mine is a Canon Pixma iP1500, but this is not the only model available.

Go to Icing Images.com or Kopykake's website. That's where I started researching before I got mine. They both sell starter kits, but I got my printer from eBay!

Most will agree, you can get started for under $200, and almost everyone I've heard of uses some type of Canon printer. HTH!
