I'm rather new to cake decorating and very new to using fondant. I've heard about satin ice fondant and checked out their website but I can't figure out how to order. What is the difference between this product and the Wilton fondant? Is one better than the other? Can anyone tell me how to order satin ice?

hello & welcome to CC....

I'm new to cake decorating/fondant/etc myself...based on others' opinions on CC, I started with Satin Ice and didn't even bother with the wilton fondant...I found it easy to work with and definitely tastes MUCH better than Wilton's product. BUT, it is more expensive...my next step is to learn how to make MMF (marshmallow fondant) which everyone here seems to think is tastier and cheaper than purchasing fondant and not terribly hard to make....there's a recipe for it here on CC.

In Houston, the specialty cake supply stores carry Satin Ice so I'm not sure how to help you there....did you check out their website? I think you can order directly from them...

Satin Ice is delish!! MMF is good too, but has more of a sugary taste..but it's cheap and easy to make!

Satin Ice can be purchased at www.sugarcraft.com, as well as many other online cake suppliers. You can even try your local cake supply store!

Satin Ice is a really good fondant....don't even try Wiltons....totally gross (tasting)!!! And, I guess the cost depends on where you live, cause here in NY, they cost the same. I get mine from a local store which also has a website (Kerekes restaurant supply)....

But, I have also been making MMF lately....it is really easy to make and less expensive....

5 # of Satin Ice costs me $16.00 whereas 5 # of MMF costs approx. 1/2 that.......depends on what kind of ingredients you use....

I buy the store brand marshmallows and sugar in 2# bags from Walmart and it comes out great!! Just make sure you grease everything...including all bowls, spoons, hands, surface....and don't worry about not using all the sugar...I am usually left with a cup too much.

have fun and don't be intimidated....

Sorry to butt in....

when using MMF i hear you need to colour it when mixing, if you don't have that great of an eye for how much of each colour is needed can you colour it afterward? Also do people actually eat, instead of picking it off the cake...( is it good for wedding cakes?)

Thanks for all the advice, I appreciate it! I think I'll try making my own MMF and look around for a specialty shop in town that sells Satin Ice. After my first taste of Wilton's fondant I don't think I'm going to decorate my best friend's wedding cake with it!!

Hello ladies!! charleydog, I normally color mine after is done resting and I haven`t had any problems with it , yet. About people eating it, I guess it depends, I roll out the MMF not to thick and add nice flavors and people say they like it, so I guess they eat it.

Well, good luck! thumbs_up.gif
Bye!
