Trying to make a big fondant bow to go on top of star cake out of Celebrating Fondant book for a shower. The book says add gum-tex to bow, could not find in store, needless to say my practice bow fell apart. Any suggestions or do I really need gum tex? And how to you restore shine after rolling in powdered sugar or cornstarch?

Fondant bows have to be completely dry or they will break. Gumpaste is stronger than fondant. I would use a mixture of gumpaste and fondant to make bows to give it strength. If you don't have a cake supply store that has gum tex or tylose, you can order it online http://sugarcraft.com/D-gumpaste.htm

You can brush on luster dust to give it sheen or pearl dust to give it a shimmer. Both can be purchased at sugarcraft. If it is a white bow, you might use Super Pearl pearl dust or antique silk luster dust.

I just made my first fondant bow and man was I nervous. It's for my cousin's wedding tomorrow. So, I started making the loops on Sunday and I just put the bow together last night. Once the loops were dry enough for me to pick them up I painted on the luster dust and I can say so myself I did a decent job for my first attempt.
My question is do you just add the powder gumpaste to the fondant?

I saw gumpaste in the store, but no gum tex, which is what the book called for. Can use use gumpaste instead? And how much do you add to the wilton or mmf fondant.

Fondant bows can certainly be made with just using fondant! I've made them with just fondant and had no problems.

To make it stronger, you could make the bow from a fondant/gumpaste (50/50).

missmelbox...you need to actually make or buy pre-made gumpaste and then add it to the fondant. I don't think that just using the gumpaste "powder" with fondant would work.

What store are you looking at? Michaels usually carries Gum-Tex. It's in a can like the 4oz MP comes in. I want to say the label has purple on it.

MrsMissey, I get it. Thanks! It's good to know just in case I need my fondant to dry quick!
