You lightly dust it with cornstarch and shake it off and press it against fondant or Crusted Buttercream icing. You have to repeat the steps a few times!! You also have to make sure and line up the pattern as well!!

I always use it after the cake is already covered.

I just got one, and did a cake with it. It came out pretty decent. I didnt dust it with anything though and did not have any problem. There isnt much need for directions, just make sure that you line up everything so it matches when you finish (not very hard as it's transparent!). Dont try to bend the mat to curve around the cake. Press it in lightly and match it up when you are ready for the next series. I posted a photo under my photos, take a look, easy stuff.

Earlene has these instructions on her site...

Impression Mats are made from clear plastic for easy matching and alignment. Use with fondant or a crusting of buttercream. Imprint pattern beginning and ending 1" inch from the two vertical edges. If pattern becomes moist from the icing wipe clean and dust lightly with cornstarch (In a knee high stocking) and continue your imprints. Repeating as necessary. Matching in the back may not be exact so leave some blank area to adjust the pattern as necessary in the back of the cake.

I find them easier to use when my icing is cold so i will chill my cake before making the impressions.
