I wish I could help but I cant. I would love to hear the ideas. A friend of mine just bought her 1st house and i want to do a house cake for her.
here's a pic of cake, cut and stacked to make a house.
that's all a house really is -- boxes -- or in our case tiers of cake.
roofs carved to get slants.
first floor=one tier.
second floor=another tier stacked on top
and then roof = more cake carved.
main house -- one set of tiers stacked
extension -- another tier w/ roof shoved up against the main body and iced so it all looks like one cake
piece of fondant with little lines drawn in (similar to doing bricks) -- then sponge multicolored and while still wet from sponging, hit with some type of coarse sugar to get the rough texture.
of course -- if you really want to drive yourself or possibly a child helping you totally nuts -- cut out little individual shingles and then shingle the roof.
For shingles, you could use:
squares of dried fondant or gumpaste
Necco wafers
Shredded wheat
any small, square cookie or candy
Or look at gingerbread houses--books or websites--and see what else is used.
I was looking at the house cakes here and one made by SueBuddy used shredded wheat as her roof. It looked really cool. It looked like snow but dont they make ones without the frosting??
Wow, Thanks for the ideas - you guys rock!
Sounds like this is going to end up being one heck of a big cake!
You could use impression mats to make it look like clapboard or shingles. I've used these http:// w w w.countrykitchensa. com/ product 35-2620 Icing Impression Mat Assortment of 5 on crusted buttercream and fondant.
Thanks rblee, I couldn't find the exact impression mat you had linked, but even the brick one might work, coloured as Doug mentioned earlier!
Another idea for the roof that I think might work, is to use Chex cereal. If you stacked them to look like shingles and then maybe sprayed them brown or black. (I forget from the picture, what color the roof is) Just thought that cereal kind of reminded me of shingles. Let us know how it turns out for sure!!!! You better post lots of pictures!!! Good luck!!!
The set has 5 mats http:// w w w.countrykitchensa.c o m /catalog/product.aspx?T=1&productId=626652 "Realistic touches include the clapboard, basketweave, woodgrain, cobblestone and brick. One mat of each design is included in the set of 5."
That sounds like a great investment! I've wanted to get some impression mats, and I could probably incorporate most of those into this one cake!! LOL!
I'm not sure if we have Chex in Canada....I can't remember seeing it in the cereal aisle, but then again, I only usually look for what I'm buying!
I'll post pics for sure, although the cake won't be until mid September...
