Vanilla yellow cake with chocolate buttercream filling, IMBC buttercream under MMF. All decorations and details are MMF. Birthday boy's name and age are incorporated into the design.

Very cool! The birthday boy must have flipped out when he saw this! How did you do the wheels? I've made a couple racecars, and I can never figure out how to do the tires right. Thanks!

The wheels are 50/50 fondant and gumpaste. Learned the hard way - the first race car cake I did the wheels "deflated" overnight because the fondant was still too soft, so it looked like the car had 4 punctures. Even my 5 year old girl noticed. I just rolled the paste into a ball, flattened it out a bit and then used the other end of an icing tip to make an impression which I put silver dragees in.

Funny you mention that - that's exactly what happened to me this weekend - I made a Lightning McQueen cake for my son, and the black fondant was so soft, the back tires deflated! We decided I "meant" to do that, since he does get two flat tires in the movie. Ha ha. Thanks for the info!

I forgot to say that I dried the tires overnight before putting them on, that really helped the tires hold their shape. Funny Lightning McQueen story!
