Black Forest Cake

This cake was for my father's birthday. I made a rich devil's food chocolate cake, filled it with imported Italian maraschino cherries (not the kind from the jar) that had soaked in brandy overnight, and frosted with a white buttercream flavored with kirschwasser (cherry flavored liqueur). I piped large stars around the sides and middle and topped each with a jarred maraschino cherry, then used very fine chocolate shavings to dust the top.
