how do you get the top so smooth?

I first used the icing tip # 789 then smoothed with an angled spatula. I generally use a little corn syrup to thin my icing down. I think that also helps with smoothing. These were the first CCC I had ever done. I found out that they were so easy and the teachers loved them more than the kids...no clean up involved!

I did my first CCC a couple of weeks ago for the HS marching band - kids loved it!! Your CCC is very cute - did you freehand the ghost/tombstone?

No, I printed the picture on paper then pinpricked it with a needle and laid it on the cake surface and made an impression of the image then just filled it in with icing.
