He Who Sows Generously...

He Who Sows Generously... on Cake Central

Made for the Sunday school volunteers' appreciation luncheon. There was so much more I wanted to do with it, but I ran out of time. My cakes always have a nasty problem with bulging, and I always thought it was because I didn't let them settle long enough, but I let this one sit for 36 hours before a dot of icing touched its surface, and it STILL bulged. Also, I suck at covering in fondant, and I realized too late I had no silver luster dust, but I think it came out okay anyway. Any tips for next time?

It looks great to me! Because of the painting, you see the bulging. Sorry I don't have any advice for the bulging because I have the same problem sometimes. Great job! :)

If you hadn't said anything it looks like part of the can is just bigger on the bottom. We are our own worst critics. It looks great. :D

I think it looks completely AWESOME!! I As for the bulging.. I thought it looked like part of the can I would've never know the difference.

Oh, no, the cake was suppoed to taper out towards the bottom, but there were still unsightly bulges that you can't see too well in the pictures. There's also a big, ugly crease in the fondant underneath the bag of seeds from where I still haven't learned to cover cakes properly yet.

Goodness, this is a cake you think has problems?! I think it looks terrific, and no need to make light of your bag of seeds covering up some fondant flaws - doesn't everyone decorate over problems, be they cracks, dings, discolorations, tears, etc.?! I think the cake looks really neat, your little garden of seeds and sprouts around the can is wonderful, and your can color came out perfect even w/o the silver. Watering cans don't stay shiny! :) Luv the water inside too - great effect.

I have started using a very stiff BC to pipe the dam and fill the cake. I mean REALLY stiff!!! Add PS until it is firm enough to roll into a ball with your hand.

Love it...I have to do a pink one for March 9th...How did you do the spout...what did you use to hold it up so it wouldn't fall?Any tips you can share!!

The bulges here look intentional -- not to worry. But I'm starting to wonder if bulging isn't sometimes more a problem with the fondant being too soft rather than the cake settling. Just happened to me the first time I tried making MMF. Much less a problem when I use Pettinice. I think the MMF actually stretches as it sits on the cake and thus starts bulging at the bottom? Anybody?

Thank you all so much! I molded the spout out of RKT covered in fondant on a sharpened dowel, and drove it in at an angle on site, and there were no problems. I have to say, this cake was the easiest I've ever transported. I doweled down the center, and the thing seemed to be built upon a rock. I was actually afraid to post this here, because it had so many problems, but you guys have been so encouraging! Thank you!

I think think this cake is amazing and the colours and biges add to the charm. This would be ideal for my pastor who loves gardening. I think every cake decorater here has had to cover up mistakes at some time.
