Thanks everyone! The snowflakes are just made from modelling paste (gum paste?), and I used my no.1 favourite ... Patchwork Cutters - snowflake cutters ... again!!! I think I'll be finding reasons to do these mid-summer!!

zoraya, I got my set from an online shop here in UK ... they're available in most cake craft shops here. But I have seen Patchwork Cutters cutters (!) on US websites too.. Beryls etc ... not sure if they've got the snowflake ones though.

Did you just model the "hanger" that the snowflakes are on? BEAUTIFUL!!

BeckySue, yes I just rolled out some modelling paste (gum paste?) and curled them up, I also stuck some cocktail sticks halfway in to secure to cake with, & left to dry for a few days. Attached to cake with royal icing.
