Mother Gingerbread

Mother Gingerbread on Cake Central

My 10 yr old daughter won 3rd place in the youth division at The National Gingerbread House Competition 2011 at the Grove Park Inn with this piece during the week she was rehearsing for her role as one of Mother Ginger's little girls in her ballet school's production of the Nutcracker ballet! I guess life does imitate art...CONFECTIONARY art, that is! (LOL) She used 4 different kinds of gingerbread. Traditional gingerbread, white gingerbread, chocolate gingerbread and whole grain gingerbread. Mother Ginger's skirt and the skirts of the little girls are made of white gingerbread. The lace on Mother Ginger's skirt, the cuffs, collar are made of sugarveil. The sugar "candies" that adore the stage are made of blown isomalt sugar. This was her first attempt at working with blown sugar. My daughter invented the idea of making gingerbread pearls (like the ones made with fondant or gumpaste) and rolling them in brown pearl dust. She used them to trim all the dresses.
