Purse Cake on Cake Central

To get this shape, I started with baking the cake in a rectangle (half or full sheet cake pan) then cut it into equal, horizontal layers. I stacked the layers and filled with buttercream. I recommend not using fillings that are too soft so it will hold its shape when carving. After refrigerating it for a little while to firm up, I carved the shape I was looking for with an electric knife. The handle is wired ribbon which worked best at the last minute.
