Octogon Wedding Cake With Brooches

Wedding cake from this weekend. The bride saw a picture of a cake that came from Graceful Cakes, and wanted somthing similar. She also wanted octogon shaped layers which were really horrible to ice since octogons really just want to be circles!! This was my first time ever using the viva paper towel smoothing technique and I was really pleased with how the butter cream could get "squished" into smoothness! Also the brooches were a pain in the arse to attach to the sides, I would have preferred to have wired them onto long floral staple thingys but the jewelry was from the bride's grandma so I had to construct weird toothpick, tape, plastic wrap and white ribbon contraptions to pin the brooches onto and be able to stab into the cake. The lessons learned from this cake are 1.Say NO to octogon shaped layers 2.It's fun to smooth paper toweling onto icing. 3. Insist on using/providing the cake "jewelry" that way you can choose light-weight pieces and remove parts and rig like you want.
