Precious Cargo Baby Shower Cake Central Gallery

Our cousin is having a baby boy! Immediately upon hearing the news many months ago, I told her that my gift to her would be the cake for her baby shower & just tell me the theme. I was so excited when she said the theme was going to be antique planes & “Precious Cargo”! And the colors of red & teal are two of my absolute favorite, & also one of my favorite combinations. Not content with just having a topper sitting on the cake, I wanted the plane to be flying! The baby’s name IS “Jett”, so it needed to be flying! I had to have some help with this as I couldn’t get one to work that wasn’t too heavy. My dear friend & awesome cake artist Miguel Guerrero of Mad Mike’s Cakes came to my rescue & created the plane out of wafer paper! Yes, wafer paper! The body is rice krispy treats, & the front & propeller are gumpaste, but everything else is wafer paper. The antique suitcase bottom tier is a strawberry lemonade cake with fondant & gumpaste decor, with edible image luggage stickers & tags. The middle tier is a red velvet cake with teal-colored cream cheese buttercream filling, so even the inside matched the theme! The globe is a styrofoam ball covered in fondant & edible images. The board is covered with fondant which I hand-painted in a rich dark wood finish. This one caused me some tears & frustration along the way, as many things went wrong. But I was so pleased with the end result, that it was all worth it! And the momma-to-be was absolutely thrilled, so that was the best reward of all!
